The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football team will look to track down their first playoff win as a program with a trip to Columbus Catholic for a Class 1A first round matchup on Friday. Clarion-Goldfield last won a playoff game in 2011.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (5-3) concluded the regular season with a 43-7 win at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura last week. The Cowboys have had a potent run game with 2,138 yards (second most in Class 1A). Joel Meier with 819 yards and Selvin Gonzalez with 749 yards have led the charge. The duo has combined for 20 touchdowns. The Cowboys defense only allowed three opponents to score more than 16 points this season. CGD Head Coach Caleb Vogel says playing with consistency and physicality will be a necessity.
“We got to come out fast. We have to limit those mental mistakes, those unforced errors. We cannot jump offside. You can’t be sustaining the drive, then go backwards and go forward. We have to be consistent. We have to have that mindset, we’re going to score in every possession,” says Vogel. “Up front, we just have to be physical. Our offensive linemen have to get after it. We got three, four really good backs, plus our quarterback that can handle the rock. Up front, we have got to be physical right off the whistle.”
Columbus Catholic (5-3) concluded the regular season with a 28-20 home win over Aplington-Parkersburg last week. The Sailors offense has been balanced with over 1,000 yards passing and rushing. Amani Robinson captains the offense with 914 passing yards and 14 touchdowns (12 passing and two rushing). The Sailors defense has allowed only two opponents to score over 20 points this season.
This will be the first meeting between the teams since 2011.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Waterloo.
