Freeze Warning Issued Overnight for Much of Central Iowa

A Freeze Warning is in effect this (Thursday) morning for much of central and north-central Iowa, including Franklin, Butler, Grundy, Hardin, and Wright counties. The National Weather Service in Des Moines says the warning runs until 9 a.m., with overnight lows dipping to between 26 and 32 degrees and widespread frost expected.

Forecasters say these freezing temperatures could kill or damage crops and other sensitive plants, and may also impact unprotected outdoor plumbing. Residents are advised to cover or bring in tender vegetation and disconnect garden hoses where possible.

This (Thursday) morning’s cold snap follows yesterday’s (Wednesday) widespread Frost Advisory, which brought near-freezing temperatures to areas like Iowa Falls, Hampton, and Parkersburg. The low temperature in Hampton yesterday morning was recorded as 34 degrees. Conditions are expected to moderate slightly by tomorrow (Friday), but additional chilly mornings are possible heading into the weekend.
