With the ongoing federal government shutdown, local food pantries are experiencing an increase in demand. Now, the Grundy County Food Pantry is asking for community support to help local families facing food insecurity. Feeding America reports that families, federal workers, and seniors may soon struggle as paychecks and food benefits are delayed. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services has warned that November SNAP benefits may not be available, affecting roughly 131,000 Iowa households, including many in Grundy County.

Barb Grant, Executive Director of Operation Threshold, says the pantry is already feeling the strain and urges residents to donate cash or nonperishable food items. Donations can be brought to Operation Threshold’s Grundy Center office at 1606 G Avenue. The office is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to noon and 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
