State Senator Sandy Salmon of Janesville, who represents Senate District 29—including Butler, Bremer, Chickasaw, and part of Floyd County—has released her latest newsletter updating constituents on her thoughts on various state and national issues.
Salmon says the ongoing federal government shutdown, which is now in its 4th week, continues to impact Iowa families, including those relying on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Payments or “SNAP” food assistance. She says the Governor Kim Reynolds is coordinating with food banks to help fill gaps in benefits until federal funding resumes.
Salmon also discussed education oversight in her update, including a call for stronger background checks in school leadership hiring, and expressed support for using E-Verify in state employment. On the state budget, Salmon noted that while revenues are lower due to Iowa’s new flat tax, the state’s finances remain solid with healthy reserves. She says lawmakers will continue focusing on fiscal responsibility as the 2026 session approaches.
