The Rowan City Council took action on a vicious dog incident during its regular meeting on Monday, November 3. Mayor Lennea Groom told the council she was contacted by the Wright County Sheriff last week after a dog killed a cat in a resident’s yard. According to the sheriff, Rowan’s current ordinance lacks enforcement measures.

The dog was quarantined at a veterinary clinic in Belmond. The council voted to require proof of vaccination and a meeting with the owner before the dog returns to town. Council members also agreed to revisit options for establishing code enforcement, including possibly contracting with Dows.

In other business, the council approved a snow removal bid from Mountain Movers, the same contractor used last year. Plans continue for Rowan’s annual Soup Supper on December 6, and the city will purchase new extension cords and power strips for holiday lighting needs.

Council members also reviewed a nuisance abatement issue involving garbage at a property on Rout Street after complaints were received about rats. The owner was given 10 days from November 2 to clean up the property before the city steps in and charges expenses back to the resident.

The next Rowan City Council meeting is scheduled for December 1 at 7 p.m. at the Rowan Community Center.
