A Mason City man was arrested Tuesday night after leading authorities on a high-speed chase through the city.

The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office says the pursuit began around 9:34 p.m. when a deputy attempted a traffic stop near 6th Street Northwest and North Federal Avenue. The driver, identified as 37-year-old Clay Douglas Kalvig of Mason City, fled from deputies, reaching high speeds on multiple streets.

Mason City Police and the Iowa State Patrol joined the chase. During the pursuit, authorities say Kalvig rammed a Mason City Police vehicle, causing damage. He also drove through a construction zone on South Federal Avenue, damaging the area and a sheriff’s office vehicle.

Kalvig was eventually stopped and taken into custody near 5th Street Southeast and South Vermont Avenue. Deputies say his vehicle had significant damage, and marijuana along with drug paraphernalia were found inside.

Kalvig has two prior convictions for eluding law enforcement in Cerro Gordo County. He now faces multiple charges, including felony eluding, possession with intent to deliver marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while barred, and no proof of insurance.
