Broncos Aim for Balanced Attack as New Season Begins

The Belmond-Klemme girls varsity basketball team will be looking for several younger players from last year’s roster to step into larger roles for the 2025-26 season.

After graduating five seniors, two of whom combined to score more than half of the team’s total points, the Broncos will rely on their returning underclassmen to carry a greater share of the scoring and leadership responsibilities.

To help with the transition, Head Coach James Severson says this offseason has been focused on building a strong foundation.

“We’ve just done a lot of trying to get some fundamentals and skills down,” says Severson. “We’ve been to some camps throughout the summer to try to prepare our girls for that next step into the varsity role.”

Severson says rather than leaning on one standout scorer, he hopes to see points coming from across the lineup.

“We don’t need one player or two players to score 20 points a game,” says Severson. “We want to kind of spread that out so that a lot of girls get an opportunity. And if we get six or seven girls with seven, eight points a game, that’s going to be really, really good for us in the end.”

With a focus on fundamentals and team-wide scoring, the Broncos will begin preparing for the upcoming season when practices start Monday.

Belmond-Klemme opens the season at home Nov. 24, hosting North Butler at 7:30 p.m.
