With snow in the forecast this weekend, Hampton city officials are reminding residents of Hampton’s snow ordinance and winter parking rules.
When the snow ordinance is in effect, parking is not permitted on residential streets until the ordinance is lifted. Property owners are also required to clear snow, ice and debris from sidewalks adjacent to their property within 24 hours after the weather ends.
City policy calls for road clearing when snow accumulation reaches two inches. Alley plowing will depend on frost conditions, and may not occur if the ground is too soft. During heavier snow events, residents may see windrows — piles of snow — pushed to the center of downtown streets. Drivers are urged not to travel through these areas and to use caution when driving.
City officials are asking residents to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and avoid driving unless necessary during poor weather. The ordinances are designed to protect both residents and city crews working to clear streets and sidewalks.
