The #2 (1A) Grundy Center football team is preparing to compete in a seventh straight semifinal game. They’ll take on #3 (1A) Iowa City Regina Friday inside the UNI-Dome.
Head Coach Travis Zajac says they’ll need to cut down on some mistakes that they committed in Friday’s win over #8 (1A) Beckman Catholic in the quarterfinal round.
“I think if we take away probably five or six pretty bad play calls on my part and a couple penalties, I think it’s probably our cleanest game that we’ve played this season,” Zajac says. “But that’s not the way that we’re going to be able to coach it. We to have to really lean into our mistakes and get those things better in order to compete well and give Regina the best shot we can.”
Friday’s win was the program’s 18th consecutive postseason win, which is the fourth-longest such streak in IHSAA history. With 50 straight wins overall, they’re now in third place on the all-time list, needing seven more for the all-time record.
“For the fifth year in a row, we got to play three bonus games in Spartan Stadium as part of our postseason run, and we get to play inside seven years in a row qualifying for at least the semifinals. We’re in really special times right now, and I hope our kids and their families, our school district and our community realize how blessed we are.”
Friday’s game will start at 10:00 a.m. on 99 The Wave.
