The Belmond-Klemme boys basketball team enters the 2025-26 season looking to build on the momentum gained from last year, momentum that has been growing over the past few winters as a core group of players has gained varsity experience and matured.
In just a few seasons, the Broncos have gone from winless to a team opponents can no longer afford to overlook in the Top of Iowa Conference. Last year’s 12-12 finish was fueled by a talented group of underclassmen, many of whom return this season and bring experience, confidence and momentum back to the lineup.
“This season should really be kind of the culmination of a lot of things, not that it’s necessarily the end, but we’re definitely reaching a point where I firmly believe that we can compete at the top of the Top of Iowa West,” says Meyer. “Not necessarily that we are going to win all of our games, but I think that we definitely can compete with anybody on our schedule.”
Depth will also play a major role in how far the Broncos can climb this season. With experience spread across the roster, Meyer says the team’s rotation adds versatility on the floor.
“I think our biggest strength, and I’ve told a lot of people about this, is going to be our depth,” says Meyer. “I truly believe that we have 10 guys that are prepared, have either played varsity basketball or have played a lot of JV basketball, and are ready to step on the varsity floor. There’s not a team in our area that I think can necessarily match up our 10th player to their 10th player. I’ll take our 10th player for that all day long. I really have a lot of faith in 10 guys to be able to play. I think with that, we can maybe have a little bit more defensive intensity. We can do a lot more things that way.”
The Broncos open their season against conference foe Bishop Garrigan on Dec. 4.
