State investigators are looking into an officer-involved shooting that happened Sunday night along Highway 20 in Black Hawk County.
According to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance after the incident on Nov. 16.
Authorities say the situation began around 9:30 p.m. when deputies, the Iowa State Patrol and other agencies attempted to stop a vehicle driven by a wanted man out of Waterloo. The driver refused to pull over, leading to a pursuit.
During the chase, the vehicle became disabled on the shoulder of Highway 20. Officials say the man got out of the car, displayed a firearm and fired at officers. Deputies from Grundy County and a State Patrol trooper returned fire, striking the man.
Officers attempted lifesaving measures before the man was taken to MercyOne in Waterloo, where he was later pronounced dead.
No officers were injured. Those involved have been placed on critical incident leave, which is standard policy.
The DCI says the investigation is ongoing, and no further information is being released at this time.
