New information released Tuesday identified the man killed in an officer-involved shooting Sunday night along Highway 20 as 47-year-old Benjamin Sink, a Waterloo resident wanted on several domestic-related charges at the time of the incident.
According to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), the incident began around 9:30 p.m. on November 16th when the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Sink. Deputies requested assistance from the Iowa State Patrol and other nearby law enforcement agencies as they attempted to pull him over.
Sink refused to stop, prompting a multi-agency pursuit across county lines. Officers deployed stop sticks during the chase, disabling the vehicle and bringing it to a halt on the shoulder of Highway 20 in Black Hawk County.
Authorities say Sink then exited the vehicle, produced a firearm, and fired at officers. Deputies from the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office and a trooper with the Iowa State Patrol returned fire, striking him.
Officers immediately began lifesaving measures at the scene. Sink was transported to MercyOne Hospital in Waterloo, where he was later pronounced dead.
No officers were injured in the exchange of gunfire. Those directly involved have been placed on critical incident leave, which is standard procedure following such incidents.
More details about this incident will be released at a future date.
