Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, a lifelong farmer from Butler County, says he hopes the end of the 43-day federal government shutdown will lead to more cooperation in Washington. In a statement Tuesday, Grassley said dysfunction in the nation’s capital “does not serve Iowans,” and urged lawmakers to bring “common sense, not partisan nonsense” to the policymaking table as the holiday season approaches.
In a recent press release, Grassley said he did not take a paycheck during the shutdown and will donate his missed wages to three hometown churches: First Baptist Church of New Hartford, New Hartford Community Church and Prairie Lakes Church.
Grassley is also a cosponsor of the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act, which would require members of Congress to remain in Washington until all 12 annual spending bills are approved. The bill would also trigger an automatic continuing resolution at previous year funding levels to keep government operations running and avoid future shutdowns.
