The National Federation of Independent Business is urging Iowans to shop local during this year’s Small Business Saturday on November 29th. The NFIB, Iowa’s leading small business advocacy group, says supporting neighborhood shops, restaurants, and service providers is one of the most direct ways to strengthen local economies.

NFIB Iowa State Director Matt Everson says Small Business Saturday is an opportunity for Iowans to “cultivate our local economy by choosing the unique shops and hardworking neighbors that enrich our towns.”

According to NFIB’s October Small Business Optimism report, small business owners continue to face challenges, with a net negative 13 percent reporting higher sales over the past three months.

Small Business Saturday began in 2010 following the Great Recession and has grown into a nationwide effort to encourage shoppers to spend locally. Last year, consumers spent an estimated $22 billion at small businesses across the country.

Local advocates say every purchase made November 29th helps keep dollars in the community and supports the entrepreneurs who keep Iowa’s main streets thriving.
