A man is in custody after an officer-involved shooting and hours-long standoff Thursday morning near the intersection of C13 and Franklin Avenue in Butler County, according to the Iowa State Patrol and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
Authorities say the incident began around 9:10 a.m., when the Butler County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting that a man was shooting into an occupied residence, with multiple people trapped inside. Deputies and ISP troopers were immediately dispatched.
When officers arrived, a state trooper encountered a man carrying a firearm that matched the caller’s description. An exchange of gunfire occurred moments after the trooper made contact. The armed subject then fled into a nearby residence, prompting a large law-enforcement response.
An ISP Tactical Team arrived on scene and successfully evacuated several people from the home. All were removed safely.
With the home secured, an ISP negotiator established communication with the barricaded subject. After negotiations, the man surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody. Authorities say he had multiple gunshot wounds from the earlier exchange and was transported to a hospital. He is expected to survive.
Investigators later determined the shooting was not random, and that the suspect had a pre-existing connection to the victims.
No law-enforcement officers were injured during the incident. The ISP trooper involved in the gunfire exchange has been placed on critical incident leave, which the agency says is standard procedure. No names have been released as the investigation continues.
