The AP-GC girls wrestling team was scheduled to compete at Saturday’s tournament at Belle Plaine, but it was cancelled due to weather.
Defending Class 1A state runner-up Grace Storjohann leads the team at 120 with a 6-1 record, returning qualifier Zoey Uhlenhopp is 6-3 at 155, and Caylee Harken has the second-best record on the team at 6-2 at 145. Storjohann recently made her way into the record books with her 100th career pin.
“It’s pretty rare for someone to get 100 career pins in a four-year career,” Head Coach Joel Reints says. “And she was able to accomplish that right at the beginning of her senior season. So a great milestone there. I think she’s about 25, 26 matches away from 150 wins as well. So hopefully she can get that in too this year. But definitely a leader for us and doing an excellent job again. Zoey probably had one of the tougher brackets at South Tama. A couple of state qualifiers and placewinners down there, but looked really good I thought in her offensive attacks and is doing a nice job in the wrestling room, being a leader for our team. Caylee Harken has been working really hard in the offseason to gain more experience and improve her wrestling technical skills, and she’s gonna be a tough one for us and, doing a really good job as well.”
With strong participation numbers, Reints says they’ll be close to filling a dual team lineup.
“I think we’re gonna probably leave open 105, 110, and then one of the upper weights, 170 probably. But you never know, things change too, and girls decide to change weight classes later in the season after they get their allowance. But other than those three weight classes, we’re pretty solid there. So I really like where we’re at from a numbers standpoint.”
They’ll next compete at the Dan Gable Donnybrook Tournament at Xtream Arena on Thursday, December 4.
