According to a press release from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, a Marshalltown man died on Thursday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a disturbance call on Thanksgiving Day.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called just after 12:30 p.m. Thursday to the 3300 mile of 130th Street for a report of a disturbance with a family member who had shown a handgun. The family member left in a vehicle before deputies arrived and was believed to be heading to Marshalltown.

Just after 1 p.m., Marshalltown Police observed the family member driving into the Iowa Veterans Home property and conducted a traffic stop with the vehicle. Officers identified the driver as 23-year-old Jorell Handorf of Marshalltown. After several attempts to establish contact with him, officers determined he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities say Handorf was not an Iowa Veterans Home resident or employee.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Marshalltown Police Department, Marshalltown SWAT, State Center Police Department, Unity Point Health Ambulance Service, Marshalltown Fire Department, and the Marshall County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The incident remains under investigation.
