The West Fork girls wrestling team has three events in the books and will enter a busy stretch of five events leading into Christmas break. Head Coach Onni Prestidge shares concepts the team needs to execute.
“We will continue to add tools to the toolbox. What we have to make sure we are doing is not just giving away free points. We have to be tough on bottom. We cannot just let a girl get to our legs. If we do let a girl get to our legs, we can’t just give them a take down. Those are the things the day after a meet, we have to be focusing on, this is where we have to be better,” says Prestidge. “We’re able to use the rest of the week as, let’s put puzzle pieces together. Then we can make sure that at the end of the year, it actually looks like what’s on the box.”
Leading the Warhawks lineup is senior Jenny Ramirez, who is 8-2 at 145 pounds and sophomore Josi Janssen who is 7-0 at 140 pounds.
“One of our captains and our sole senior this year is Jenny Ramirez. These young girls look up to her. They’re asking her questions. She’s coming out and she’s battling every day. She’s wrestling with every kid in the room, whether they’re new or whether they’re experienced. She’s just able to bond with kids in a way that not many can,” says Prestidge. “We’ve got Josi Janssen, who had an amazing freshman season. She’s coming out ready to compete. She’s pushing Jenny and the other girls as hard as she can and as fast as she can.”
The Warhawks will return to the mat for a Top of Iowa Conference quad at Nashua-Plainfield on Thursday, December 4.
