IDALS launches enrollment for crop insurance discount program

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig announced Monday (Dec.1)  that sign-up is now open for the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s annual Crop Insurance Discount Program, which offers farmers a $5-per-acre premium reduction for fall-planted cover crops.

Naig says the initiative highlights Iowa’s leadership in conservation and offers a simple way for farmers to save money.

Online enrollment is available now through Jan. 23 at apply.cleanwateriowa.org, or by contacting a crop insurance agent.

The program, part of Iowa’s Nutrient Reduction Strategy, provides the premium discount with no acreage cap. Eligible acres must not be enrolled in other IDALS or USDA-NRCS cost-share programs, and some policies — including Whole-Farm Revenue Protection and those covered through written agreements — may not qualify.

Now in its ninth year, the program is jointly administered by IDALS and the USDA Risk Management Agency. Nearly 2,000 farmers have enrolled more than 1.4 million acres since its launch.
