A man involved in a shooting and hours-long standoff in Butler County last Thursday has been identified. Authorities say 55-year-old Michael Wayne Allen of Dougherty was taken into custody after an exchange of gunfire with an Iowa State Patrol trooper.

The incident began around 9:10 a.m., when the Butler County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting that a man was shooting into an occupied residence near the intersection of C13 and Franklin Avenue, with multiple people trapped inside. Deputies and ISP troopers were immediately dispatched.

When officers arrived, a state trooper encountered a man carrying a firearm matching the caller’s description. Moments later, gunfire was exchanged. The armed subject—now identified as Allen—then fled into a nearby residence, prompting a large law-enforcement response.

An ISP Tactical Team arrived and safely evacuated several people from the home. With the home secured, an ISP negotiator established communication with Allen. After negotiations, he surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody. Authorities say Allen had multiple gunshot wounds from the initial exchange and was later transported to a hospital.

Investigators determined the shooting was not random and that Allen had a pre-existing connection to the victims. Allen is currently being held at the Butler County Jail and has been charged with three counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon, all being class C felonies, and one count of going armed with intent, a class D felony

No law-enforcement officers were injured. The ISP trooper involved in the gunfire exchange has been placed on critical incident leave. No additional names have been released as the investigation continues.
