Governor Kim Reynolds has issued a disaster proclamation for Hamilton County after federal officials confirmed a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza at a two-barn turkey site. The proclamation is effective immediately and runs through Jan. 1, 2026.
According to the governor’s office, the declaration allows state agencies, including Iowa Homeland Security and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, to assist with tracking, monitoring, rapid detection, containment, disposal and disinfection efforts. It also temporarily waives certain regulatory requirements for commercial vehicles responding to affected sites.
State officials say the recent detections of avian influenza do not pose an immediate public health risk, and poultry products remain safe to eat. Producers who observe symptoms of HPAI in their flocks are urged to contact their veterinarian right away.
