The Franklin County Emergency Management Commission selected Eric Arenholz as its new Emergency Management Coordinator during their meeting in November.
Arenholz takes over for Joel McWilliams who is now serving as chief deputy in the sheriff’s department. Arenholz has been a member of the Hampton Fire Department for 20 years and tells RadioOnTheGo News, like his predecessor, a strong and resilient department will remain central to his vision.
“When the opportunity presented itself as he (Joel McWilliams) took the chief deputy position, there was interest brought to me, seeing what he was creating and the direction he was taking things really sparked my interest to continue that and make sure it goes down a good direction.”
As he steps into a position that requires both big-picture planning and day-to-day readiness, Arenholz says it’s important to stay ahead of potential hazards, like summer storms and winter blizzards.
“So severe weather is a big thing, especially with winter. Getting those alerts out and making the public aware of the situation that could be arising. And then in the spring and fall we also have severe weather that’s possible too. So just getting those alerts out and making the public knowledgeable about the situations that could arise.”
Arenholz officially began his duties last week. As he continues working through the training courses that accompany the position, Arenholz says he’s focused on putting that knowledge to use as the department moves forward.
