The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows basketball teams will host St. Edmond on Friday night for a North Central Conference doubleheader.
The Cowboys enter the matchup following an 81-54 win over Eagle Grove on Monday in their season opener. Before regular-season play began, Head Coach Jason Berning emphasized that the team’s early focus is on building consistency at both ends of the floor.
“We just have to be a little more consistent on the offensive side,” says Berning. “So that’s something that we’re really trying to work on early — getting our best guys in position to hopefully score for us. And then defensively, we’re working on being better in the half court and being better in the full court.”
St. Edmond finished second in the North Central Conference last season with a 23-4 record. The Gaels return a seasoned roster after graduating only one senior. Friday night will mark their first regular-season game.
The Cowgirls enter Friday’s game aiming to take another step in rebuilding their varsity program as they continue to seek their first win. Though they have already played two games, the guiding philosophy Head Coach Ashley Kahler shared in the preseason still shapes their approach.
“I think our big focus is fundamentals and just rebuilding what this team can be,” says Kahler. “We have 17 girls, but we have quite a bit of younger classmates on the team, too, and some skill levels that are just starting out. So just building the fundamentals and focusing on our effort and our growth throughout each day.”
The Gaels girls will also be looking for their first win after a 76-46 loss to Bishop Garrigan in their opener.
The doubleheader is set to begin at 6 p.m.
