Broncos Hoops traveling to Manly Monday

The Belmond-Klemme basketball teams will travel to Central Springs for a Top of Iowa Conference crossover doubleheader Monday.

The Broncos girls (1-3) are coming off conference losses last week to Bishop Garrigan and Lake Mills, games where slow offensive starts left them playing from behind. Despite the early struggles, Head Coach James Severson says the group is finding ways to grow offensively as players adapt to their new roles.

“We have a lot of girls settling into roles that they feel really comfortable in,” says Severson. “Still trying to grow some, a little bit more scoring, but we’ve found a home at making the extra pass and driving in the lane.”

Central Springs, still seeking their first win, will also look to correct their slow offensive starts.

The Broncos boys (1-1) split their games last week, falling to Bishop Garrigan before rallying past Lake Mills in overtime. Head Coach Justin Meyer says the Broncos are concentrating on a defensive approach they hoped would shape their style of play — a plan that took hold in overtime as they limited Lake Mills to six points.

“We have a lot of proof of concept of some of the things that we want to do defensively and what kind of defensive team we want,” says Meyer. “It was pretty impressive in the fact that this first week of practice, to be honest with you; on the offensive side of the ball, all of our offensive work really came as a byproduct of our defensive work.”

Central Springs will be searching for their first victory of the season.

The doubleheader starts at 6:15 p.m.
