A Republican has won Tuesday’s special election for a seat in the Iowa House. Unofficial results show Wendy Larson of Odebolt finishing about 40 points ahead of Democrat Rachel Burns in District 7, which covers Sac, Calhoun and Pocahontas counties and part of Webster County.
It was Larson’s second race in the district. She has campaigned on protecting landowner rights in an area where some property owners oppose the Summit Carbon Solutions pipeline. Larson came within 53 votes of defeating Rep. Mike Sexton of Rockwell City in last year’s Republican primary.
This fall, President Trump appointed Sexton to serve as state director of USDA Rural Development. He resigned from the Iowa House on Sept. 19. Larson’s victory keeps the Republican majority at 67 seats.
