The West Fork girls and boys basketball teams will have to wait until Friday for their next contest after Tuesday’s Top of Iowa Conference East doubleheader at Northwood-Kensett was postponed due to weather.

The West Fork girls (1-2) have lost back to back road games to #7 (3A) Forest City and Garner-Hayfield-Ventura last week. The Warhawks offense is working to clean up 20 turnovers per game. The defense is seeking to further limit opponents scoring output by increasing rebounds (14) and steals (5.3) per game. Head Coach Rodney Huber says they have a driven group that will continue to improve, it starts with defense.

“I’m a very defensive minded coach. We’ve been very good defensively in the past and it’s led to success. If we keep moving forward on that, we’ll have a shot,” says Huber. “This group of kids, they want to win, they want to improve. I think they’re focused on the right things and practicing hard. They really take it to heart. I think we’ll continue to get better and hopefully that translates into wins here.”

Zada Huff with 14.5 points and Evie Hitzhusen with 12.5 points per game lead the Warhawks.

The West Fork boys (0-1) lost 65-55 at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura on Thursday, December 4. The Warhawks will look to improve on 18 turnovers against G-H-V. The Warhawks utilized an 11 player rotation in the opener, six Warhawk players reached the scoring column in the matchup. Head Coach Abe Maske highlights team chemistry and establishing a player rotation as focal points.

“We’re really looking hard at just trying to find consistency. Consistency with each individual that’s going to step up and play for us. We’re also within that trying to find the right mix that meshes and gels together. Then also in the process of getting all of them to learn and appreciate, but also to adapt to how each other does things,” says Maske. “We basically have, I’d say in most ways, a brand new team coming together and learning to play together. It’s not that the talent is not there. It’s just a matter of bringing together, finding the right group and letting them play.”

Zander Hansen delivered 17 points and Lane Kollman had 16 points to lead the Warhawks against the Cardinals.

West Fork will host Newman Catholic for a Top of Iowa Conference East doubleheader on Friday.
