AGWSR will host Grundy Center for a North Iowa Cedar League basketball doubleheader Thursday.

The #10 (2A) Spartan girls (5-0) will look to continue their hot start to the season. Junior Ava Mundt has picked up where she left off last season, averaging a double double of 12 points and nearly 13 rebounds per game.

“She kind of picks up right where she left off last year as a sophomore, she was pretty much a double double most nights,” Head Coach Matt Lindeman says. “And so the nice part for us is, we’re able to play eight or nine. That’s our goal. And on any one of those nights, any one of them can step up, whether it’s in the offensive categories or defensively, the job that they do. So really pleased with that and that will make us stronger as we keep going, the ability for any one of those to step up night in and night out.”

AGWSR (0-3) has had a slow start to its season, but hung close in last week’s loss to East Marshall.

“We’re just continuing to do things that are going to put us in positions to win,” Head Coach David Koop says. “It’s good to be in games where you can work on down the stretch stuff. We lost by 15, but we were winning or it was a two to four point game for probably all of it until the last four minutes. And then we just kind of ran out of gas, but we’re doing the little things right. We just haven’t translated it to the game to get those wins. And we have Grundy and Columbus to finish the week. I think we can compete with those teams. Hopefully we can translate it to some wins.”

In their last game, the Grundy Center boys (3-0) had a last-second win at Columbus Catholic Tuesday. Judd Jirovsky and Ryder Slifer each have scored 14 points per game to lead the team. AGWSR (0-2) will look to bounce back from consecutive lopsided losses.

The doubleheader will start at 6:15 p.m.
