The Sesquicentennial Bell is now permanently installed on Campanile Plaza at the University of Northern Iowa, and organizers of UNI’s 150th anniversary celebration hope students will visit and ring the bell as the fall semester ends.

Sesquicentennial Celebration co-chair Randy Pilkington says the bell typically does not have its clapper installed, but the clapper will be in place beginning Monday morning and will remain through Finals Week. Pilkington says the goal is to start a new tradition, encouraging students to ring the bell to mark the end of exams and for graduating seniors to celebrate the completion of their UNI journey.

While the bell cannot be rung for most of the year, Pilkington says students are welcome to rub it for good luck.
