The Sheffield City Council met Monday, hearing department updates and beginning early planning for the upcoming budget. City Clerk Ashley Francis proposed holding a budget meeting on January 20th at 6:00 p.m. and outlined options to address an ongoing penny shortage, including rounding charges, creating a “penny shortage” line item, or adjusting water bills. The issue will return for discussion in January.

Under old business, a DNR representative reviewed fishery recommendations for the Sheffield City Pond, emphasizing the need to deepen the pond to 9–10 feet and manage aquatic growth. Chemical treatment is estimated at $150 per acre, and potential REAP grant funding may support improvements. Sidewalk and trail expansion near the city park and Casey’s will also be revisited next month.

The council approved deconstruction and asbestos bids totaling $89,460 for the former Marty’s Saloon building.  A proposal to adopt the TextMyGov communication system was discussed and will be revisited at the budget meeting.

Following the completion of routine business, the council proceeded to organizational matters for 2026. Mayor Brad Mulford was sworn in for another term, and the council thanked Ryan Kruger for his service on the city council.
