The holiday season brings increased travel across Iowa, and safety officials are reminding drivers to make responsible choices behind the wheel.
Impaired driving remains a serious concern, contributing to an average of 37% of fatal crashes statewide. To address the risk, state and local law enforcement agencies are increasing patrols as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s high-visibility impaired driving enforcement campaign, which runs through January 1st.
The effort is aimed at deterring drunk driving and preventing deadly crashes during one of the busiest travel times of the year.
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, using a taxi or rideshare service, or taking advantage of community sober ride programs when available. The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau emphasized that the cost of a safe ride is far less than the consequences of an OWI conviction. Motorists are also urged to report suspected impaired drivers to law enforcement.
