The Aplington-Parkersburg basketball teams split a conference doubleheader at Hudson Tuesday, as aired on 99 The Wave and RadioOnTheGo’s YouTube channel. The #15 (2A) girls lost 52-48 in overtime and the boys won 59-31.
The Falcon girls battled in a back-and-forth matchup that featured slow starts by both teams. Trailing 8-7 after the first quarter, the Falcons clawed back in front for a 22-16 halftime lead despite numerous turnovers that killed possessions. AP extended its lead to as many as 33-20 in the second half, but the Pirates closed regulation on a 20-7 run to send the game to overtime. After AP was unable to connect on crucial scoring opportunities, Hudson sealed the game at the free throw line for their third straight win in the series. Kolbie Wangsness and Ava Eddy each scored 12 points, and Kiara Morris added 11.
The boys played lockdown defense, holding the Pirates to 10 points in the first half. Heating up from the field as the half progressed, Trevan Thomas hit a buzzer-beater just before halftime for a 30-10 lead at the break. Tyler Wedeking hit four three-pointers and led with 19 points.
Senior Sully Janssen says they bounced back from Friday’s loss with strong defense.
“Our emphasis through practice and everything this week was just toughness,” Janssen says. “We knew we needed to bounce back. We didn’t play very tough against Denver, and so the whole goal tonight was just be the toughest team. We knew that we just needed to kill their energy. Wes had a couple big threes, Tyler had a couple big threes, so shout out to them.”
Janssen scored 12 points.
AP will return to action Thursday at East Marshall on 99 The Wave and RadioOnTheGo’s YouTube channel.
The AP/GC wrestling teams went 2-2 in triangulars at East Marshall. The boys defeated the hosts 64-17 and Roland-Story 41-36. The Falcons had four pins and six wins by forfeit against the Mustangs, and six pins and a technical fall against Roland-Story.
The girls wrestling team was defeated by Gilbert 57-18 and South Tama County 66-17.
