The AGWSR basketball teams will travel to La Porte City on Thursday for a North Iowa Cedar League doubleheader against Union.

The Cougar girls (0-4) will continue to look for progress against the Knights. AGWSR is led in scoring by Natalie Sizemore, who is averaging 6.8 points per game. Carlie Hoodjer leads the team in rebounding at 4.8 per game, while Brylea Metzgar leads the Cougars with 14 defensive rebounds.

The Union girls (2-4) come into the matchup after defeating Columbus Catholic 41-27. They are led in scoring by Reagan Glenn who is averaging 8.4 points per game.

The Cougar boys (0-3) have also had a slow start to the season, with offensive production and turnovers presenting early challenges. Head coach Ryley Schipper says the team has focused on making adjustments while continuing to improve execution.

“We’ve got to keep working on things, refining things,” says Schipper. “We’ve kind of changed some things in the offense to try to allow us to get open more and not play so much one-on-one. And hopefully that’ll lead to some wins.”

As the Cougars’ NICL schedule continues, Schipper says consistent improvement will be key.

“I’ve said it before, I don’t think there’s any nights off in the NICL,” says Schipper. “And you start the season with all NICL games. And so we’ve really got to continue to get better each night. And whether that’s back to back to back or if we get some time off. But the way this winter’s been, who knows what’s going to happen. We may play four a week all the way through January if we continue to get snow. So we’ll keep working with the guys. We’ll get better every night. And hopefully that’ll lead to more wins and more success.”

The Knights (5-1) come into the matchup after defeating Columbus Catholic 65-54. They are led in scoring by Tate Van Dyke who is averaging 15.2 points per game.

The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m.
