The Iowa Falls-Alden boys wrestling team will host #1 (2A) Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and #5 (2A) Algona for a North Central Conference wrestling triangular Thursday.

It’ll be the first duals for the Cowboys, which will begin their dual season after a third place finish last season and many individual state qualifiers back. Head Coach Cory Yoder says this date has been circled on their calendar.

“That’s the one we’re looking forward to before Christmas break,” Yoder says. “And then we head into the Battle of Waterloo where we’re gonna see some great competition. The Algona one and the Hampton-Dumont-CAL one are the ones that we’re really looking forward to, because we know those teams are very very good and very well-coached.”

The Cadets are 6-0 and will put their record to the test against two of the league’s favorites. Head Coach Scott Patton says it’ll take a high level of intensity in conference duals, especially against top teams.

“We want to be the most aggressive team on the mat each time we go out,” Patton says. “That’s what we teach. We don’t teach a lot of hanging back, waiting for your opponent to make a mistake, which works. We like to be the aggressors, taking the match to the other team. That’s something that we’ve focused on this year. Just being consistent. We don’t want to be on that roller coaster, highs and lows. We want to stay consistent and try to peak towards the second half of year when we get to conference and district time. So being consistent, I think, is a huge goal for us.”

Zane Gillespie at 120, Kolbe Hansen at 126 and Jase Ites at 138 are each off to undefeated starts.

It’ll be the first dual meet for Algona after some previous postponements.

Action will start at 6:00 p.m.
