A Mason City man has been sentenced to federal prison on firearm charges.

29-year-old Brandon Mitchell was sentenced Thursday in federal court in Sioux City to 57 months in prison after pleading guilty to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

According to court records, Mitchell had two prior misdemeanor domestic abuse assault convictions in Cerro Gordo County, which made it illegal for him to possess a firearm.

Investigators determined that on Feb. 24, 2024, Mitchell possessed a 9mm pistol while under state felony indictment on charges including attempted murder and intimidation with a dangerous weapon.

During a search of his residence, Mitchell admitted to throwing the firearm out a bedroom window in an attempt to avoid detection.

Mitchell was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Leonard T. Strand and will also serve two years of supervised release following his prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Iowa Division of Narcotic Enforcement, and the Mason City Police Department.
