The Iowa Department of Education on Friday released fall 2025 certified enrollment figures showing a continued decline in K-12 student numbers statewide, alongside growing use of school choice options.

Total certified enrollment across Iowa public and accredited nonpublic schools fell to 515,221, down from 520,021 last year. Public school districts and public charter schools accounted for nearly 92% of enrollment, with certified numbers declining 1.53% to 473,329 students. State officials noted the decrease aligns with long-standing national trends tied to lower birth rates and fewer students advancing between grades. National projections similarly forecast a nearly 5% drop in U.S. public school enrollment by 2031.

While most Iowa students remain in their neighborhood public schools, more than one in six families selected alternative options. More than 44,500 students open enrolled outside their home districts, and accredited nonpublic school enrollment rose to 41,892 students. Public charter schools enrolled 1,172 students. Additionally, 41,044 students used a Students First Education Savings Account at an accredited nonpublic school.

Officials say the enrollment data highlight both ongoing demographic trends and the growing role of school choice in shaping Iowa’s education landscape.
