Gov. Kim Reynolds and Iowa Health and Human Services announced the state will begin participating in the federal SUN Bucks program, also known as Summer EBT, starting in 2026.
The announcement comes after the U.S. Department of Agriculture approved Iowa’s request for a waiver to align SUN Bucks with the state’s new Healthy SNAP guidelines, which take effect Jan. 1, 2026.
Under the updated guidelines, SNAP and SUN Bucks benefits may be used to purchase healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, grains, meat and dairy. Taxable items like candy, soda and some prepared foods will be excluded.
Eligible families will receive $40 per child per month during the summer on Electronic Benefit Transfer cards, which can be used at authorized retailers across Iowa while school is out.
Reynolds says the change will help address both hunger and health by focusing food assistance on nutrition. Iowa HHS Director Larry Johnson says joining SUN Bucks will expand access to healthy meals and provide families more flexibility.
Eligibility will be based on household income and participation in programs such as SNAP, Family Investment Program, or qualification for free or reduced-price school meals. Most eligible children will be automatically enrolled.
Additional enrollment details will be available on the Iowa HHS website in early 2026.
