The Aplington-Parkersburg basketball teams each came up short in a non-conference doubleheader at Waverly-Shell Rock Monday, as aired on 99 The Wave and RadioOnTheGo’s YouTube channel. The girls fell to the #6 (4A) Go-Hawks 59-14 and the boys lost 69-64.
In a lopsided girls game, the Falcons had trouble scoring and couldn’t get stops. The Go-Hawks jumped out to a 29-7 lead at halftime courtesy of domination in the paint. AP managed only seven points in each half on 12 percent shooting for the game.
In the boys game, the teams traded leads throughout. The Go-Hawks built a 33-29 halftime lead, and extended it to as many as 11 in the second half with several clutch three-pointers. AP’s Cole Brouwer cut the deficit to 63-61 in the closing minutes, but an offensive foul and subsequent turnovers prevented the Falcons from getting closer.
“They got three run-out layups and we lost 12 in the zone twice, and that little stretch was a 9-0 run, that’s the difference,” Head Coach Aaron Thomas says. “I liked our fight. We got down 11, came back. I really appreciate the toughness that our guys showed, stayed with it. And playing against the physicality, it prepared us for down the line. For our guys to do that without Benny, for us, scoring’s a little bit harder right now. But to get that many points on this pretty good defensive team, proud of that. We need to do better defensively. Some of that’s transition.”
Tyler Wedeking led with 27 points, Brouwer scored 12 and Wes Shirk added 10.
The Falcons will return to action Monday, January 5 at Gladbrook-Reinbeck.
