U.S. Senator Joni Ernst, through a press-release on Monday, December 22, recognized Latimer Grocery in Franklin County as her small business of the week. Ernst, who chairs the Senate Small Business Committee, is honoring one business in each of Iowa’s 99 counties during this Congress. Latimer Grocery Store Manager Gina Blau shares her thoughts on the recognition.

“It’s a great honor. We work really hard to cater to our community, our school and our churches,” says Blau. “We just do everything that we can to support school functions. We help host Latimer Days. We help with the surrounding towns also.”

Founded in 2008, the store is currently owned by a cooperative in the community. Their locally sourced products and popular deli have made them known for sandwiches, pizzas, and harvest season meal deliveries. Blau’s vision of the store’s mission in the local area.

“I don’t consider it like work. We consider it a service to the community,” says Blau. “We have had to diversify. We’ve lost some businesses in the small area that we live in. We try to provide all the services that you would get in a bigger town, you just don’t have to drive as far to get them.”
