The Belmond-Klemme girls basketball team is navigating a season defined by growth, resilience and a commitment to getting better with each game.
At the holiday break, the Broncos are 1-7 but continue to build toward future success behind a group competing through early-season inexperience.
As that inexperience begins to turn into growth, Head Coach James Severson says he has been encouraged by the team’s progression.
“Definitely learned that our team is fighters and that they’re willing to keep learning and keep growing with each game,” says Severson. “We kind of started off with a lot of inexperience. And so we’re just kind of still jumping over some of those hurdles of that inexperience. We are, every game, I would say, is getting better. Every game is improving.”
Individual progress has also begun to surface across the lineup. Senior Kendra Huedepohl and junior Nevi McMurray have provided a scoring punch for the Broncos, while senior Kaylen Morris has anchored the team on the boards. Senior Lila Swenson has added an aggressive defensive presence, leading the team in steals. Sophomore Avery Boeshart and freshman Carly Stein continue to gain valuable varsity experience as the season progresses.
While statistical improvement has been gradual, Severson says the Broncos have embraced a team-first mindset that extends beyond the box score.
“Overall, I think our girls are really interested in everyone else’s success,” says Severson. And I think that’s a huge part of our team. And so I just really want to compliment them on that.”
The Broncos return to action Jan. 2 when they travel to Forest City.
