The Iowa Department of Transportation and Iowa Department of Public Safety say Interstate 35 is expected to reopen early this afternoon.
The agencies closed I-35 on Dec. 28 from Ames to Clear Lake, later extending the closure to the Minnesota state line, after the roadway became impassable due to winter conditions and near-zero visibility from blowing snow.
As conditions improve, state and local crews will continue working through the morning today to remove disabled vehicles from traffic lanes and complete snow and ice removal to ensure the interstate is safe for travel.
Despite the planned reopening, the Iowa DOT and DPS say motorists should not seek alternate routes until later in the day. Officials warn many secondary roads remain hazardous and offer limited access to shelter and traveler services.
The Iowa DOT and DPS are also coordinating with Minnesota officials, where portions of I-35 were closed due to the same winter storm.
Drivers are encouraged to check Iowa 511 for the latest road conditions before traveling.
