The Hampton Police Department has released additional details regarding Saturday (12/27) night’s vehicle crash at Hampton-Dumont High School. Police confirmed the incident was reported at approximately 9:18 p.m. after a vehicle struck the school’s main entrance, triggering the building alarm. When officers arrived, they found the front entrance heavily damaged, but the vehicle had already left the scene.
Police say a witness in the neighborhood described the vehicle as a gray SUV that backed out of the building and headed east on 12th Avenue Northwest. While officers were investigating, a vehicle matching that description pulled into the school parking lot. The driver identified himself as 64-year-old Kirk Gunderson of Hampton. Police say Gunderson admitted to driving into the building, and officers detected the odor of alcohol. Gunderson was subsequently arrested for operating while under the influence, first offense. He was also cited for reckless driving, failure to obey a traffic control device, failure to maintain control, and leaving the scene of an accident.
In a previous statement, H-D Superintendent Tim Felderman confirmed no students or staff were injured. An early estimate places damage to the school at approximately $250,000. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $5,000. School officials say the building will be secured and safe before students return from holiday break on Monday, January 5th.
