The South Hardin Tigers girls basketball team continues to focus on development and consistency as the season moves forward, with Head Coach Kellie Drury encouraged by the team’s progress despite a challenging start in the win column.
Drury says the Tigers have shown steady improvement as players adjust to the speed and physicality of varsity basketball.
“Each game we can see these girls moving forward at their skill level and them understanding the varsity play and everything like that,” says Drury. “We’re just not seeing it on the win and loss side. We’ve gotten some really, really close games and we just haven’t been able to pull it out.”
South Hardin is 1-4 on the season, picking up its first win against AGWSR. Three of the Tigers’ four losses have been by 10 points or fewer, including two losses decided by fewer than five points.
As the season unfolds, Drury says giving players opportunities has been critical, especially with several athletes gaining varsity experience for the first time.
“I had a whole team of, um you know some seniors, some juniors. I got a lot girls in those age brackets that haven’t ever played in a varsity level,” says Drury. “So it’s just, getting them in, getting those minutes, seeing how they react, seeing how the physicality is and how they match it and what they can do and who steps up which game.”
At the holiday break, junior Ayda Eller leads the Tigers in scoring and assists, while senior Kathleen Mosher leads the team in rebounding.
South Hardin returns to action Jan. 5 against Sumner-Fredericksburg.
