State Treasurer Roby Smith says 2025 was a record-breaking calendar year for returning unclaimed property through the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt.
According to Smith, more than $33.6 million in total assets were reunited with individuals and businesses during the year, with 53,226 claims paid to rightful owners or heirs who are past or current Iowans.
Smith says the total set a new annual record, surpassing the previous high established in 2024 by more than $2.7 million, and notes the figure could continue to grow as additional claims are processed.
In addition to the record amount returned, Smith says another milestone was reached in November, when the state recorded its highest total for property turned over to safekeeping.
As of publication, the state is holding more than $648 million in unclaimed property waiting to be claimed.
