The University of Northern Iowa is planning to renovate Redeker Center dining center, the largest student dining center on campus. UNI’s Michael Hager says part of the renovation includes updating the individual venues where different types of food are served.
“The one venue that I’m pretty enamored with is the one of the venues we’ll deal with allergens, and it will have food at that venue that has is minus the top nine allergens for students,” Hager says.
He says it will ensure they get food that won’t cause them problems.
“We deal with a lot of students that have different food allergies. We serve them very well. We have a registered dietician on staff that they can meet with, they can actually custom order food after meeting with that registered dietitian,” Hager says. “So rarely do we have a student come through that we’re not able to accommodate their needs, and those have been increasing over the last ten years. And so this will more mainstream that particular venue.”
Hager says one organization has recognized UNI as the best in the state for its food service.
“Niche.com has listed UNI as the number one college dining in the state for nine of the last ten years, the last eight consecutive,” he says.
Hager says the Redeker Center has not been upgraded in the last 20 years. The Regents gave approval for the school to develop design and construction plans for what is expected to be a three-point-four million dollar project.
