The Grundy Center basketball teams each won in blowout fashion at AGWSR Friday, as aired on 99 The Wave and RadioOnTheGo’s YouTube channel. The #10 (2A) Spartan girls won 62-8 and the boys won 70-44.
In the girls game, the Spartans jumped out to a hot start and never looked back, leading 39-5 at halftime. They put the running clock rule in effect with the first bucket of the second half, and cruised from there with bench players finishing the game for both teams.
“For us, the goal was to come out with the focus and the energy, also the details, doing all the little things and making sure that we were sharp,” Head Coach Matt Lindeman says. “Obviously, they knew going in that it could be an easier game, but doing all the little things right away from the start. And really I felt that we came in and did what we asked them to do. And so it’s a good start to the new year.”
Kali Aldrich and Karlee Lynch each led with 10 points. Claire Culver led the Cougars with six points.
In the boys game, Grundy Center started strong, which was a turnaround from many of December’s games. They jumped out to a 40-20 lead at halftime, but AGWSR had many instances of going point-for-point in the second half. Senior Brayden Davie led with 16 points.
“It was a confidence booster for us coming off the Christmas break,” Davie Says. “We didn’t want to play Wapsie right away, good team, so we came here and just kind of wanted to get our kinks out. Starting fast definitely helped us, we haven’t started off very fast. Coach would be honest about it but either than that I think it was a good win for us.”
Jayce Fryslie added 11 points and Ethan Meester scored 10. Blake Willems led AGWSR with 18 points, and Bo Starr scored 15.
In their next action, AGWSR will be at Denver Monday and Grundy Center will be at Wapsie Valley Tuesday.
