Iowa House Republicans have released their legislative priorities for 2026 as the next legislative session begins Monday, Jan. 12, highlighting affordability as a key theme also emphasized by Democrats.

In a post on the Iowa House Republicans Facebook page, GOP leaders listed reducing the property tax burden as a top priority, saying they want more certainty for homeowners and businesses. Republicans also say keeping Iowa affordable is essential, pointing to rising prices in recent years and stressing the need for Iowa to remain an attractive place to live. Public safety is another focus, with Republicans saying they plan to pursue policies aimed at keeping violent, repeat offenders off the streets.

House Democrats say affordability will be central to their agenda as well. House Minority Leader Brian Meyer of Des Moines, speaking to Iowa Starting Line, says Democrats are focused on addressing the cost of living for Iowans, even as disagreements remain over other legislative priorities and how to achieve affordability goals.

Republicans currently hold majorities in both chambers of the Iowa Legislature. The 2026 legislative session convenes Monday (Jan. 12) at the State Capitol in Des Moines. Email addresses for local legislators can be found below.
