Local gas prices run higher than Iowa average despite statewide dip

The average price of regular unleaded gasoline in Iowa edged lower this week, according to AAA.

AAA reports the statewide average fell 1 cent from last week to $2.37 a gallon. That price is 48 cents lower than a year ago. The national average on Wednesday stood at $2.82, down 2 cents from last week.

Crude oil prices also declined over the past week. West Texas Intermediate crude fell $1.49 per barrel to $56.37, while Brent crude dropped $1.01 to $60.23. One year ago, WTI was trading at $74.99 a barrel and Brent crude at $77.84.

Diesel prices in Iowa also moved lower. Retail diesel fell 5 cents this week to an average of $3.25 a gallon, compared to $3.29 a year ago. Iowa’s diesel price is now 29 cents below the national average of $3.54.

Locally, prices varied by community. As of Wednesday afternoon, GasBuddy reported regular unleaded gas at $2.54 a gallon in Hampton, $2.44 in Belmond and $2.59 in Greene.
