Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig says he plans to introduce the Iowa Farm Act, a wide-ranging legislative package aimed at supporting farmers, strengthening rural communities and preparing Iowa agriculture for long-term success.
Naig says the proposal is built on input from farmers, agribusinesses and rural stakeholders and is designed to address current challenges while preparing for the future. The legislation would expand economic opportunities for farmers, deliver targeted tax relief, support beginning farmers and the ag workforce, and strengthen the state’s ability to respond to foreign animal disease outbreaks.
The package includes provisions to modernize farm zoning and agritourism rules, expand local food markets through the Choose Iowa program, and provide tax relief tied to farm succession, grain handling and on-farm inputs. It also focuses on improving biosecurity, protecting producer confidentiality during disease events and streamlining state agriculture regulations.
Several commodity groups and ag organizations have voiced support, calling the proposal a practical, forward-looking investment in Iowa’s farm economy.
Naig says he looks forward to working with lawmakers and Gov. Kim Reynolds during the 2026 legislative session to advance the proposal.
