Postmark change alters how USPS dates mailed items

The United States Postal Service has adopted a new rule changing how mail is postmarked, a move that could affect time-sensitive deliveries in rural areas.

The rule, which took effect Dec. 24, 2025, requires mail to be postmarked based on the date it is processed by an automated sorting machine at a regional facility, rather than the date it is collected from a mailbox or post office drop box.

USPS is encouraging customers to send important mail early, noting that items will no longer automatically receive a same-day postmark when dropped off.

The change could impact deadlines for materials such as tax returns, court filings or other legal documents.

USPS says customers who need a same-day postmark can still obtain one by bringing their mail to a post office counter and requesting a manual postmark.
