The AGWSR boys basketball team will step out of conference play Thursday with a road game against BCLUW.

At 0-9, the Cougars will be in search of their first win. However, they played their closest game of the season in Tuesday’s 50-47 loss to Gladbrook-Reinbeck. That night, they jumped out to a 28-19 halftime lead and traded leads in the closing minutes, but couldn’t hang on. Head Coach Ryley Schipper says limiting turnovers has been a crucial point of emphasis, averaging over 17 per game.

“We have to value the basketball,” Schipper says. “I think that’s what’s hurt us the most, is turnovers. So we’ve got to limit the turnovers and get more possessions. The more possessions you have, the more chances you have to score and the less opportunities they have to score. So I think that’s going to be our main focus. And if we can do that, I think we’ll give ourselves a chance to be in a lot of basketball games.”

Bo Starr leads with 13.0 points per game, with 10.7 by Blake Willems.

BCLUW (5-3) is coming off Tuesday’s 41-39 win over Clarksville, snapping a two-game losing streak. Four players average in double figures, led by Aiden Frank’s 15.0 points per game.

When the teams met last season, AGWSR notched its first win of the season, 48-34.

It’ll start at 7:00 p.m.
